  • Come shake our hands: MultiCare hospitals win Best Hands-on Care

MultiCare’s four hospitals have earned the 2010 “Best Hands-on Care Award” from the Washington State Hospital Association.

The award announced Oct. 13 recognizes MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital, MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, MultiCare Allenmore Hospital in Tacoma, and MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital and Health Center in Tacoma for their efforts to ensure proper hand hygiene to decrease the spread of infection.

The hospitals received the award because of their exemplary rates of hand hygiene, their evidence-based system of measuring usage of soap and sanitizer, and for the way usage rates compare to the number of patients at the hospitals.

MultiCare hospitals were the only medical facilities in the South Sound to be recognized for their hand hygiene. MultiCare has won the "Best Hands-on Care Award" every year since the honor was created in 2007.

MultiCare’s leadership in the hand-hygiene campaign is part of a collaborative effort among hospitals in Washington state to reduce preventable hospital acquired infections. The program began in 2005 as the nation’s first statewide effort to bring hospitals together to share strategies for improving hand hygiene.

Hand washing is critical to the prevention of hospital-acquired infections, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The simple act of proper hand washing or hand sanitizing can reduce the spread of infection by 25 percent.

Across the state, 16 other hospitals have been recognized for their hand-hygiene efforts.
