Dr. W. Frederick Thompson is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with a Sports Medicine fellowship. His expertise is advanced arthroscopic knee and shoulder reconstruction. Dr. Thompson earned his BA in chemistry and MD from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He remained at Emory University where he completed his orthopedic surgery residency and was selected as administrative chief resident.
Dr. Thompson served his country as a Major in the United States Air Force from 1990-1993. He served as chief of the Department of Orthopedics at the 80th FTW and 82nd Training Wing hospital at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas.
Dr. Thompson completed his fellowship in sports medicine in 1994 at University of Pennsylvanias The Graduate Hospital and The Human Performance and Sports Medicine Center in Philadelphia, PA. During this time, he provided care to professional, collegiate, high school, and recreational athletes with sports injuries.
Dr. Thompson has been board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery since 1992. He is a fellow in the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, and a member of the Washington State Medical Association, and Pierce County Medical Society.
In the past, Dr. Thompson has been invited to speak nationally at the annual Specialty Day meeting of the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He has lectured both nationally and locally on topics related to sports medicine and orthopedic trauma, and he was asked to peer review articles for journals in sports medicine.
As a sports enthusiast, Dr. Thompson affirms to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and enjoys snowboarding, tennis, and staying physically fit. He also enjoys other activities including photography, cooking, and learning about computers.
