Ear Surgery

Improve Earlobe Shape and Proportion

Otoplasty, or ear surgery, exists to correct the shape, position or proportion of your ears. The otoplasty procedure is beneficial if your ears have been damaged or misshapen due to injury or defects present from birth. It can also help any cosmetic concerns by improving the natural shape of your ears, making them more proportional to your head and face.

The benefits of ear surgery include:

  • Reducing how far ears protrude
  • Correcting the appearance, shape and position of the ears and earlobes
  • Improving symmetry
  • Perfecting the contour of the ear folds or earlobes

Ear Surgery Expectations

Before your otoplasty, your surgeon will recommend either local anesthesia, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Incisions are generally made on the back of the ear, using internal sutures to alter the position and external sutures to close the incision itself.

Results are seen immediately after your ear surgery once the bandages are removed, with any scars hidden by the ears themselves. Most patients see their desired results after the first surgery, but you may require a second otoplasty to achieve the goals you have in mind. Earlobe surgery is an outpatient procedure that rarely requires an overnight stay.

Is Otoplasty Right for Me?

To determine whether or not ear surgery is the right procedure for you, schedule a consultation with one of MultiCare Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery's board-certified plastic surgeons. During your visit, your doctor will speak with you about the appearance of your earlobes, discuss your options and determine the best decision for your treatment.

In addition to deciding on your treatment plan, your doctor will also ask you about your medical history. Bring a list of medications, supplements and vitamins you take, and have a list prepared of the questions or concerns you may have. Being open with our specialists is key to a safe and successful otoplasty.

*A $75 consultation fee will be charged and applied towards the total cost of surgery if the procedure is elected.
