At the completion of this seminar, participants will:
Gain knowledge of the motor, sensory, cognitive and behavioral foundations for use of arm and hands for support, contact grasp and manipulation.
Observe and identify essential postural, sensory and perceptual elements necessary to use the arms and hands functionally.
Identify missing elements in children with developmental, neuro-motor or sensory processing challenges.
Set goals, plan treatment and identify strategies to optimize strengths and minimize barriers to performance.
Apply the knowledge and skills learnt to improve upper extremity function of children in daily activities.
Kim Barthel, BMR, OTR, C/NDT is a world-renowned teacher and occupational therapist, actively supporting multi-disciplinary function and healing in many cultures. A pioneer in reinforcing the importance of relationship in therapy, she is known for blending cutting-edge developments in neuroscience with the art of compassionate inquiry. With 30+ years as an OT, Kim’s specialties include Neuro-Developmental Treatment, Sensory Processing, Complex Behavior, Autism, Mental Health, Trauma Informed Practice, and Attachment. To empower personal reflection, she recently co-authored the national best-seller Conversations with a Rattlesnake with NHL hockey legend Theo Fleury. Kim’s mission is to support the conscious evolution of the human spirit.
Kim has had a vast experience in working with children since 1984. She is an advanced NDTA-OT Instructor, an author, consultant and co-owner of Relationship Matters Consultancy Inc. She offers workshops and mentorships to therapists in North America, Europe and across Asia. Kim’s personal continuing education reveals a passion for connecting with children with special needs and using the most up-to-date research in developing her therapy process.
