Adolescent Behavioral Health at Tacoma General

A Safe Place for Teens to Heal

TG Adolescent BHU

An estimated one in five teens between the ages of 13 and 18 live with a mental health issue.

Mary Bridge Adolescent Behavioral Health at Tacoma General is the first and only inpatient program in Pierce County designed specifically to help teens facing mental health crisis.

Who We Are

Our new 27-bed hospital-based unit was developed by MultiCare Behavioral Health and Mary Bridge Children's Hospital and Health Network. The space was designed to be a modern, inviting space with private rooms and open social areas, while also including state-of-the-art safety features to protect patients and staff.

Our collaborative team of pediatric and mental health experts includes a medical director, psychiatrists, psychiatric advanced registered nurse practitioners, registered nurses, psychologists, educators, social workers, and mental health techs. Working together they create a treatment plan tailored to each teen's needs, based on their diagnosis, background and triggers.

We accept patients ages 13 through 17 on a voluntary, involuntary and parent-initiated treatment basis with a provider referral.

Our treatment program is based on the recovery model and trauma informed care (TIC), valuing kindness and empowering teens to play an active role in their recovery. A wide variety of activities for patients will be available, and parent/caregiver groups will also be available to provide support for families.

Each teen's personalized treatment plan may include:

  • Care Coordination
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and treatment
  • Creative arts therapy and recreation therapy

  • Individualized treatment plan
  • Medication review and management
  • Multidisciplinary treatment interventions
  • Psychosocial assessment and discharge planning

Once teens are ready to leave our unit, their care team will work with the family and outpatient providers to have a safety plan in place. The team will also provide the parents or caregivers with tools and education on the treatment that happened during their teen's stay and how to continue to use the skills that they developed.  Follow-up appointments with their outpatient providers are also scheduled prior to discharge.
