Celebrate Child Passenger Safety Week with a free car seat check

Posted on Sep. 21, 2012 ( comments)

When you look around inside your car, do you see children?

If so, join us from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, for a free car seat inspection in the parking lot of Babies "R" Us near the Tacoma Mall.

The Pierce County Child Passenger Safety Team will be available to check your car seat for safety, and to teach you how to adjust and install it properly in your vehicle. The safety checks are led by the Mary Bridge Center for Childhood Safety in partnership with Safe Kids Pierce County, in honor of Child Passenger Safety Week that runs Sept. 16-22.

If you can't make it to the event Saturday, Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians offer free car seat safety checks every Tuesday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Mary Bridge. (Call 253-403-1417 for details.)

Car crashes are the leading cause of fatal injury for children younger than 14. Many children are not riding in car safety seats or not using seat belts correctly. A new survey says 20 percent of drivers haven't even read the instructions on how to properly install car seat safety restraints.

If you have car seat questions, call the car seat helpline at 253-403-1417. We can answer your questions and refer you an upcoming car safety seat inspection.

The Mary Bridge Center for Childhood Safety provides educational resources and services to the community to assist parents in keeping their children safe from preventable injuries; helmet and life jacket fittings at reduced costs at many community fairs and events; and car seat checks and donations of car seats to families in need.
