The construction site for the new Emergency Department at MultiCare Covington Medical Center still is covered with dust and crawling with construction workers. But the building will be finished in about a month and open to the public in early April.

This week, crews are installing glass in the windows at the front of the 24,000-square-foot building and putting final touches on the walls inside.

A visitor to the building can see the large resuscitation rooms that will handle the sickest patients and the treatment rooms where patients will be treated for broken bones, respiratory illnesses and other injuries.

“We are getting really close to finishing the construction,” said Kathleen Clary, who is overseeing the construction and then will run the Emergency Department when it opens. “In a few weeks we will start moving in equipment and training our new employees. We are really excited to bring emergency services to this community.”

The Covington E.R., which is on the campus of the existing MultiCare Covington Clinic, 17700 S.E. 272nd St., will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Here are some of the features you can look forward to in the new Covington Emergency Room:

  • Total of 19 treatment rooms, four of which are specialized for children, with a child-friendly separate waiting area.
  • Advanced imaging services will be located in the Emergency Department, including digital X-ray, CT and ultrasound, which will allow for faster diagnostic procedures.
  • The ambulance bay will be large enough to handle four ambulances at a time.
  • The ambiance of the building will be warm and soothing, with a modern, Northwest theme and plenty of natural light.

Because the new Emergency Department is part of the MultiCare Health System, it will be linked to MultiCare’s four South Sound hospitals and dozens of clinics by our system-wide electronic health records. That means wherever you’re treated in the MultiCare system, your caregivers will have instant access to your electronic health record, including your health history and such vital information as your allergies or any prescription medications you may be taking.
