Holiday Survival Guide: 5 tips to survive holiday parties
This time of year the weather outside can be frightful and the treats at parties are so delightful.
“Sailing through the holidays without packing on the pounds is tricky,” says Bev Utt, MS, MPH, RD, nutritionist and wellness coach with MultiCare's Center for Healthy Living. “Everywhere we turn, sweets and treats are there to celebrate the season.”
Don’t let the festive food and drink derail your healthy habits. Try these tips for surviving holiday parties.
1. Bring food.
This is the best way to make sure healthy options are available at the party. Make your favorite healthy dish or bring a vegetable tray to snack on.
2. Mix and mingle.
Chit chat can be a great way to pass the time and stay away from temptation. Get to know your fellow party-goers and make your way around the party — and away from the food.
3. Have a snack before you go.
If you aren’t starving when you reach the party, you’ll be less likely to overeat.
4. Choose wisely.
Fill your plate with lean protein and vegetables and be wary of calorie-laden drinks.
5. Go easy on yourself.
The holidays should be fun. Give yourself room to indulge and don’t be too hard on yourself if you splurge.
“Use this special time of the year to practice eating intentionally,” Utt says. “When you eat, just eat. Be present to relish the moment. It might be the only time you stop in your day to catch your breath.”
