Message from the CEO: Where the magic happens

Dally Tower Good Samaritan Hospital Puyallup night

It was my first day on the job, and I began it with the MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital night shift team. After an hour of getting lost and found, wandering around, and meeting the staff of our hospital that has served the community since 1951, I was on my way home by way of the Emergency Department, and there I met Dianne Crum, an ER Tech, and several of her colleagues.

During our brief conversation, in response to my word of thanks, Diane responded with a confident and engaging bit of wisdom. “This is where the magic happens,” she said. And she meant it.

I’m confident that Diane didn't mean that our team uses slight of hand to deceive or misdirect our patients and visitors. And I know she didn't mean that there was any conjuring going on.

The science and technology we use would have been seen as magic in centuries past, and it is amazing, with new innovations becoming a part of our toolbox every day, but magic it is not. And the campus and facilities are really nice, but that is not magic either.

The magic is that wonderful people with exceptional skills come together as a team and compassionately care for every patient. Not just those we might see as deserving, or those that we know, or those that are our family. But every patient.

Former CEO Diane Cecchettini talked about seeking the best result for those we serve — even when (or maybe especially when) the cases are difficult. She was envisioning how her team brings the right combination of resources, talent, skill, experience and compassion together in a distinctive and effective response for each patient who comes into the hospital.

So Diane was right. This is where the magic happens. This is where our mission of care for our community happens. And it happens every day in a multitude of ways throughout our organization.

Let the magic happen!
