MultiCare announces formation of Accountable Care Organization
MultiCare Health System has formed a commercial Accountable Care Organization (ACO) as part of its comprehensive approach to developing and participating in ACOs enabled by health care reform.
ACOs are physician-led organizations of physicians, hospitals and other health care professionals who provide care for defined populations within specific quality, safety and cost targets.
Called MultiCare Connected Care LLC, the new organization will contract with commercial insurance payors, employers and other partners to provide high-quality, cost-effective care to plan members.
“This is an exciting step forward in our journey to transform health care,” said Claire Spain-Remy, MD, Chief Physician Officer at MultiCare. “It reflects MultiCare’s commitment to fully participate in new models of heath care with the goals of improving care and reducing costs for employers and consumers.”
“We designed MultiCare Connected Care with the flexibility to contract with multiple payors, employers and other ACOs to serve various populations of consumers,” Spain-Remy said.
Within this framework, MultiCare Connected Care is developing a network of MultiCare-employed and independent community physicians who will be members of the ACO’s clinically integrated network.
“Our goal is to have our provider network in place by the end of 2014,” Spain-Remy said. “We expect to have approximately 1,600 participating providers by 2015, with the potential to add more providers as needed. With such a large provider network, we can offer convenient, comprehensive care and services through one organization.”
The MultiCare Connected Care Network will offer the full range of adult and pediatric primary care and specialty care services in Pierce and South King counties. Christopher Kodama, MD, MBA, has been appointed President, Clinically Integrated Network and ACO. Kodama has served at MultiCare for 11 years in various physician leadership roles.
