MultiCare President and CEO Bill Robertson presented Lois Bernstein with the Building a Healthier Community — Chuck & Helen Matthaei Award.

On Jan. 21 at the 16th annual Do Something Healthy event, Lois Bernstein, Senior Vice President of Community Services for MultiCare Health System, received the 2015 Building a Healthier Community — Chuck & Helen Matthaei Award, which recognizes individuals who have made an impact by improving the health of our community.

This award was created by the MultiCare Health Foundation and MultiCare Center for Healthy Living, in honor of Chuck and Helen Matthaei. The Matthaei family has been a part of this community since they founded the Roman Meal Company over 100 years ago. This award recognizes individuals who have helped improve the health of our community, and honors Chuck and Helen’s dedication and leadership in making Pierce County a healthier place to live.

“Many thanks for such a wonderful honor,” said Bernstein. “The Center is very near and dear to my heart and I am so proud of the work that you are all doing. To be given the Building a Healthier Community Award — Chuck and Helen Matthaei Award was so meaningful to me. I will treasure the memory and the beautiful Hilltop Artists glass made by student MiShawn Cabrera.”

Bernstein has served as a leader at MultiCare and in the South Sound for nearly 20 years. In her role at MultiCare, she plays a key role in fostering MultiCare’s relationship with the community through programs such as the Center for Healthy Living and Health Equity, Adult Day Health, New Adventures Children’s Center and Tree House.

Outside of MultiCare, she currently volunteers on the board of directors of the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts, Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce and the Crystal Judson Family Justice Center. She also serves on the Advisory Board for the UWT Milgard School of Business and is helping the Tacoma Law Foundation raise funds to bring a UW Law School to Tacoma.

Bernstein received the 2014 Business Examiner’s 2014 Women of Influence Lifetime Achievement Award and 2008 Girl Scouts of America Women of Distinction Award. She has been instrumental in ensuring that MultiCare is a proactive voice in community problem-solving on issues that affect the health of individuals and the community.

Bernstein was a founding member of MultiCare Center for Healthy Living back in 1999, which has transformed under her leadership to MultiCare Center for Healthy Living and Health Equity where the mission is to promote health, wellness and health equity within our community by partnering with individuals, families, schools, businesses and organizations to make healthy lifestyle choices that will improve population health outcomes.

Do Something Healthy is hosted by MultiCare Center for Healthy Living and Health Equity and is a community-wide health and wellness event featuring celebrity guests and health experts. Past speakers include Jillian Michaels, Shaun White, Derek Hough, Shawn Johnson and this year’s four-time, seven-medalist Olympic swimmer, Amanda Beard. This year’s event brought in more than 250 community members to hear her story of public success, private struggle and ultimately finding peace, self-acceptance and her own strength within.
