MultiCare names new leader for East Region
MultiCare Health System announced today that Dr. David O’Brien will be the new Senior Vice President & Chief Executive, East Region. In this new role, he will work to build partnerships in Eastern Washington and beyond to improve the health of the community and foster collaboration to build an integrated health care system when Rockwood Health System, which includes Deaconess Hospital, Valley Hospital and Rockwood Clinic, joins the MultiCare family.
He will be based in Spokane and join MultiCare on June 19. Rockwood Health System is expected to become part of the MultiCare family this summer.
O’Brien currently serves as President of Providence St. Joseph Health – Humboldt, a two-hospital and medical group integrated system in Northern California.
“We’re pleased to have found a leader who understands the importance of collaborating with patients, families, employees and the community as we build a healthy future together. Dr. O’Brien’s dedication to patients and his leadership will guide this transition and MultiCare’s investment in the region,” said William G. “Bill” Robertson, President and CEO of MultiCare Health System. “Eastern Washington is a vibrant, growing region and we look forward to partnering with residents and local organizations to improve the health of the community.”
Currently, the three entities that make up the Rockwood Health System operate independently. O’Brien will strengthen coordination in the region to promote the patient experience and enhance care. He says he’s looking forward to moving to the area and learning about the history and culture of Eastern Washington.
O’Brien has held leadership positions with St. Joseph Health since 2004, first as Vice President of Medical Affairs/Chief Medical Officer at St. Mary Medical Center, and then as Senior Vice President/Chief Operating Officer of St. Mary Medical Center (both in Apple Valley, California) before being promoted to his current role in 2013.
He received his medical doctorate from the University of California School of Medicine in Davis. He began his career as a physician, practicing family medicine in Eureka for 14 years, and he still identifies with the joys and challenges of being a doctor.
“I’m a health care executive now but I’m a physician at heart,” he said. “It really energizes me to pull together a group of people who work well together with the patient at the center.”
He and his wife, Roxanne, are avid outdoors people who love to backpack. O’Brien is also a woodworker and hopes to develop his fly-fishing skills in the rivers around Spokane in his leisure time.
