Heather and Stuart Zimmerman are the parents of Easton, the first baby born in Pierce County in 2014.

The first baby born in Pierce County in 2014 arrived about an hour after midnight on New Year's Day.

Easton Jackson Zimmerman was born at 1:13 a.m. to Heather and Stuart Zimmerman at MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup.

"We were hoping he'd be born on New Year's Eve to get the tax write off," said Heather, who spent 28 hours in labor.

The first baby of the year was cause for celebration at Good Samaritan. Nurses provided the couple with a gift basket full of baby supplies, then posed for a photo with the family.

Dr. Carrie Wong of MultiCare Women's Centers in Puyallup delivered Easton. He weighed nine pounds.

He's the second child for the Spanaway couple, who have a 2-year-old boy.

In Tacoma, the first baby of 2014 was born at MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital. The newborn girl arrived at 4:57 a.m.
