TACOMA, Washington. — MultiCare Health System will welcome Rockwood Health System’s Deaconess Hospital, Valley Hospital and Rockwood Clinic to the family on July 1 with the closing of a long-awaited purchase of the Spokane-based system.

“We’re excited to add this successful health system to our growing network that gives our communities more ways to get the medical attention they need,” said Bill Robertson, President and CEO, MultiCare Health System. “Deaconess, Valley and the Rockwood clinic have a long and proud history of serving their communities — as does MultiCare — and we are looking forward to building a bright future together.”

The expansion will add 3,600 employees to MultiCare, making it the largest community-based, locally governed health care system in the state of Washington. Following the acquisition, Rockwood Health System will convert to a not-for-profit status.

“The health community in Spokane has been an innovator in the United States and we are pleased that we get to work with the highly skilled members of Deaconess, Valley and the Rockwood Clinic,” Robertson said. “Patients will notice some changes in signage, websites and correspondence, but they will continue to get the same great care from their physicians and clinical staff at the same locations.”

Dr. David O’Brien has been hired to fill a new role in Spokane as MultiCare’s Senior Vice President & Chief Executive, East Region. In this role, he will work to build partnerships in Eastern Washington and beyond to improve the health of the community and foster collaboration to build a fully integrated health care system.

“This is an important step for MultiCare. This acquisition will help the organization advance toward our vision of becoming the Pacific Northwest’s highest value system of health.” Robertson said.

MultiCare will mark this significant event with a number of employee celebrations in Spokane during the first half of July to welcome Rockwood employees to the MultiCare family.
