Why I Ride: Alaska Airlines Courage Classic Bicycle Tour

Posted on Jul. 23, 2013 ( comments)

In two weeks, approximately 461 bicyclists will ride Snoqualmie, Blewett and Stevens passes in a three-day, 173-mile ride through the Cascades for the 22nd Alaska Airlines Courage Classic.

This will be my twentieth year riding this spectacular event. It serves as an inspiration for me to keep challenging myself to pursue my personal fitness goals throughout the year.

But the main reason I ride the Courage Classic is “For the Kids” – to end the cycle of abuse and neglect in our community. Proceeds from Courage Classic go to the Rotary Endowment for the Intervention and Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, which in turn provides funds to support the Child Abuse Intervention Department (CAID) at MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital and the statewide Children’s Trust Foundation.

Last year at the Child Abuse Intervention Department, we treated 1,149 children compared to 1,077 in 2011; 57% of the children were 0 – 6 years old, type of abuse: 62% sexual, 35% physical, 2% neglect and 4% witness to violence.

I began my career as a Pediatric ICU nurse and have cared for children who were victims of horrific abuse. I feel it is our responsibility to ensure a safe community for our children. I am grateful that I am able to play even a small part in helping to protect children and provide them with a safe place to heal – physically and emotionally.

If you are also riding the Courage Classic this year, Thank You! Our MultiCare team is 115 members strong. If you would like to support this outstanding event and cause, find out more at
