Sound Transit is in the midst of an ambitious project to expand Tacoma Link light rail service. When completed in 2022, the extended line will run along Martin Luther King Jr. Way, directly past the MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital and Mary Bridge Children's Hospital campuses, with a stop planned in front of the hospital.
We are committed to keeping our patients and families informed of impacts this work will have on them. We will use this page to provide relevant updates and will also communicate pro-actively to patients coming to one of our affected facilities for care.
To protect patients, staff and visitors from the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), we are currently not offering our normal valet parking service at our hospitals. However, staff members will be available at hospital entrances to direct you to parking locations. Whenever possible, we also encourage visitors to drop patients off at entrances and then self-park appropriately. Thank you for understanding.
MultiCare has received an update from Sound Transit that their Link Light Rail construction contractor, Walsh Construction, will begin utility replacement work along Martin Luther King Jr. Way in front of Tacoma General and Mary Bridge Children’s hospitals soon, with an expected start date around the end of February.
This work is necessary to relocate existing utilities further underground in preparation for the light rail construction itself. It will involve digging several long, deep trenches along each side of the street, as well as a number of large pieces of construction machinery
This work will happen in front of Tacoma General and Mary Bridge Children’s hospitals, Baker Center and Jackson Hall. Construction work will start as early as Monday, Feb. 25. We expect construction impacts to last a number of months.
Martin Luther King Jr. Way — as well as access to the Tacoma General and Mary Bridge Emergency Departments — will remain open during all construction activity.
Traffic impacts include:
Please plan extra arrival and departure time for your visits and appointments.
Valet parking services remain available for patients. Visit our Maps and Parking page for all our current valet locations.
MultiCare continues to work closely with Sound Transit to evaluate potential impacts and address challenges this may cause for our patients.

Sound Transit is beginning their construction work for the Light Rail expansion along Martin Luther King Jr. Way.
We expect this construction to be ongoing and to have a significant impact on our ability to provide valet services at MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital’s main entrance on Martin Luther King Jr. Way.
For this reason, we will be closing our valet services at this entrance as of Monday, Nov. 12, 2018. This closure will remain in place for the foreseeable future.
Vehicles may still enter the main entrance driveway for patient drop-off and pick-up only.
Self-parking options are available close by at the Jackson Hall parking garage, located across the street from the hospital at 314 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, and at the Baker Center Parking Garage; 316 Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Please use caution when returning to the hospital on foot, as construction may reduce sightlines and visibility for traffic on the road.
Valet parking services will continue to be available at two locations at the hospital:
Valet parking services are also available at the entrance of Mary Bridge Children's Health Center, located across the street from the hospital at 311 South L Street.
Information Desk staff is available to help drivers re-connect with patients if needed.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you and appreciate your understanding. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to our Patient Advocacy team at 253-403-1739.
