The MultiCare Rockwood Arthritis Center specializes in diseases of the joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments. We also treat soft tissue problems related to the musculoskeletal system and sports-related soft tissue disorders. This specialty, known as rheumatology, overlaps with physiotherapy, physical medicine and rehabilitation of disabled patients.
If pain in the joints, muscles or bones lasts more than six weeks, you should contact your primary physician to see if you would benefit from a referral to a rheumatologist. Rheumatologists often consult with other physicians to provide a diagnosis and work closely with patients to devise an individualized treatment plan.
Anti-inflammatory drugs reduce inflammation and relieve pain for many patients. In fact, many people with rheumatoid arthritis benefit from powerful new drugs. Administered as infusions, these drugs suppress the immune system's attack on the body.
For patients with arthritis who suffer from chronic pain, acupuncture is an effective alternative treatment. It can also help improve functioning of the immune system. One of our rheumatologists is board certified in acupuncture and oriental medicine.
