Risks and Complications of Bariatric Surgery

What Are the Risks of Bariatric Surgery?

As with any surgery, there are complications and risks associated with weight loss procedures that you should discuss with your doctor. If surgery is performed laparoscopically and complications occur during the operation, your doctor may choose to perform open surgery. Possible risks of both laparoscopic and open surgical methods include:

  • Bleeding
  • Complications from anesthesia and medications
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Dehiscence (rupture of the surgical incision)
  • Infections
  • Leaks from staple line breakdown
  • Marginal ulcers
  • Pulmonary problems
  • Spleen injury (sometimes removal of the spleen is necessary)
  • Stenosis
