MultiCare Rockwood Orthopedics has provided comprehensive care for orthopedic patients of all ages since 1951. Our surgeons specialize in the repair of diseased, injured or arthritic bones, joints and the spine, as well as care of fractures and dislocations. They use progressive medical and surgical treatments.
When surgery is indicated, new arthroscopic techniques greatly reduce recovery time. Advances in hip and joint replacement include the use of ceramic and titanium hardware along with minimally invasive surgery. These techniques result in less post-surgical pain and faster recovery for the patient.
A new treatment option is also available for persistent pain from tennis elbow. This involves the injection of platelet rich plasma (PRP), which speeds healing and reduces pain.
At MultiCare Rockwood Sports Medicine, we believe everyone is an athlete. Athletes can be any age and play on any level: youth, high school, collegiate, professional and recreational. Our providers are equipped with the specialized knowledge and skills to care for an athlete's musculoskeletal needs, ranging from arthroscopic surgery to knee, elbow, spine and shoulder reconstruction and rehabilitation. Our focus is on the athlete's health, and our top priority is getting you back to life and back in the game.
Regardless of the cause or the nature of your condition, we offer the same level of commitment to helping you overcome your injury and achieve your goals. We work with both youth and adult patients to:
We treat many types of injuries. Here are a few of the common injuries we treat:
The joints of your body are supported by ligaments, which are strong bands of connective tissue that connect one bone to another. A sprain is a simple stretch or tear of the ligament. Most mild sprains heal with "R.I.C.E." (rest, ice, compression and elevation) and exercise. The most severe sprains may require surgery to repair torn ligaments.
Your bones are supported by a combination of muscles and tendons. Tendons connect muscles to bones. A strain is the result of an injury to either a muscle or tendon. The recommended treatment for a strain is the same as for a sprain using the "R.I.C.E." method. For a more serious tear, the soft tissues may need to be repaired surgically.
Meniscal tears are among the most common knee injuries. Athletes, particularly those who play contact sports, are at risk for meniscal tears. However, anyone at any age can tear their meniscus. Older people are more likely to have degenerative meniscal tears. Cartilage weakens and wears thin over time. Aged, worn tissue is more prone to tears.
Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injuries
Another common knee injury is an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) sprain or tear. Athletes who participate in high-demand sports like soccer, football and basketball are more likely to injure their ACL. Immediately after the injury, patients usually experience pain and swelling, and the knee feels unstable. If you have injured your ACL, you may require surgery to regain full function of your knee.
The shoulder is the most movable joint in the body. But the very flexibility of the shoulder makes it prone to both sudden injury and chronic wear. After age 40, many problems are caused by the effect of repeated overhead motions for a long period of time.
Thanks to recent advancements in arthroscopy, many shoulder problems can be corrected using the same techniques that revolutionized the treatment of knee problems. Requiring just a few small incisions, arthroscopy is done as an outpatient procedure and results in less post-operative pain than traditional open procedures.
Arthroscopy enables the surgeon to see and work inside the shoulder joint to treat:
