Services Offered to WSU Students

Eligible Washington State University Spokane students may receive the medical services listed below. Not all health care services are covered, so please read this information thoroughly.

Provided Services

  • Health care services are provided at a participating MultiCare Rockwood Clinic location.
  • Services must be provided by a Primary Care Provider* or Urgent Care provider.
  • Appointments are available at most sites.
  • Please give 24 hour notice for cancelled appointments. Failure to keep scheduled appointments may result in dismissal from clinical services.
  • This plan is designed to cover most routine medical needs.
  • It does not cover all health care costs.
  • Services received that are not listed will be the student's financial responsibility.
  • Please, contact the MultiCare Rockwood Student Health department at 509-235-6151 or 509-755-6520 prior to your visit if you have any questions about contracted services.
  • Additionally, it is recommended that all WSU students carry private health insurance for uncovered services and major medical.

*A primary care provider (PCP) is an MD, DO, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or other physician licensed to practice family medicine. Does not include visits to any specialists such as gynecology, orthopedics, dermatology, endocrinology, pediatrics, and so on.



  • Common illnesses customarily treated in an outpatient or primary care setting except as otherwise described herein.


  • Conditions and complicated chronic illness which are outside the usual and customary practice as determined by the PCP.
  • Care from any specialist or a non-Rockwood provider or any medical facility other than Rockwood unless specifically contracted.
  • Hospitalization, emergency department, ancillary hospital services and medical transport are excluded.



  • Minor or uncomplicated injuries including musculoskeletal trauma, strains, sprains, contusions, lacerations, burns, foreign body removal, uncomplicated fractures.
  • Minor surgery as is customarily provided by the facility's urgent care or family practice.
  • Level of treatment is based on the medical judgment of the attending provider.
  • Facility reserves the right to triage patient for appropriate level of care.


  • All major or complicated trauma or surgery as classified by the attending provider or beyond the scope of the facility's usual practices.
  • Examples: displaced fractures, major surgery or serious eye injury. Any services requiring complicated procedures or consultation by a specialist.
  • Hospital emergency department and any related costs are excluded.


Included: Must be performed by a Rockwood primary care provider.

  • Minor or uncomplicated surgery as determined by the attending provider and not for cosmetic purposes. (Skin biopsy does not include pathology cost.)
  • Wart treatment
  • Ear wash
  • Nosebleed
  • Nebulizer treatment
  • Oximetry
  • Parenteral (injection or intravenous) administration of medication (not including the cost of medication)
  • TB skin test: only available at the MultiCare Rockwood Cheney Student Health Center or the Urgent Care Center at the MultiCare Rockwood Main Clinic.


  • Complicated procedures as determined by the attending provider or those requiring specialty care
  • IV medications, materials or additional IV for more than one hour, solutions and set-up materials
  • Pathology, cytology or associated labs not listed as covered

  • Any labs not listed under the "included" list above.
  • Outside (non-Rockwood) laboratories or ordered by non-Rockwood or specialty providers (orders from specialists or non-Rockwood providers unless otherwise specified)

  • Any X-rays not described under the "included" section
  • Spine X-rays
  • Radiological or nuclear medicine studies such as bone scan, bone density, fluoroscopy, gastrointestinal procedures, CT or MRI, mammogram, ultrasound, etc.
  • Special X-ray views
  • Any imaging ordered by non-Rockwood or specialty providers


Included: Must be ordered by the attending Rockwood primary care provider.

  • Diagnostic rhythm strip and/or 12-lead for acute problems with interpretation by the PCP (not for screening purposes)
  • Cardiologist interpretation if indicated and requested by attending PCP

Excluded: Not covered if ordered by a specialist.


Included: Must be ordered by the attending Rockwood primary care provider.

  • Tetanus: DT, TD, TDAP (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis)
  • MMR (measles-mumps-rubella)
  • Influenza (as availability permits)
    **Follow up immunizations are covered when titer demonstrates a non-responder.


  • Meningococcal (bacterial meningitis)
  • Varicella (chickenpox)
  • Gardasil (HPV)
  • Hepatitis A or B
  • Herpes Zoster (shingles)
  • Some vaccines may be available to students at discounted rate based on product availability and risk prioritization

Reproductive Health


  • Consult, office exam, education
  • Gonorrhea and chlamydia screening via urine or swab
  • HIV screen
  • Syphilis: VDRL/RPR
  • HSV culture of active lesions
  • HPV in conjunction with pap test per current guidelines
  • Cryotherapy for genital warts or molluscum
  • Pap test per current guidelines
  • Pregnancy test


  • OB services
  • Viral hepatitis tests
  • Blood test for Herpes
  • Medication or treatment unless otherwise specified


Included: When provided by the attending PCP*.

  • Sling
  • Ace bandages
  • Fiberglass cast/splint materials
  • Wound dressing
  • Sterile trays and "covered procedure" materials as deemed necessary by the PCP for acute injuries


  • Materials associated with procedures or surgeries performed outside of Rockwood Clinic
  • All durable or pre-made medical equipment
  • Orthopedic devices
  • Specialty casts
  • Crutches
  • Cervical collar, cast boots, or any materials or durable medical equipment devices



  • Annual well-female visit with breast and pelvic exam
  • Initial, complete physical for males every 1-3 years based on risk factors
  • Cervical cancer screening and cytology (pap) as recommended according to current ACOG guidelines (American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology)
  • Contraceptive counseling
  • STI screen (gonorrhea and chlamydia)
  • Pregnancy test (false/positive)
  • Urinalysis for urinary tract infection
  • Cryotherapy or curettage for minor genital warts or molluscum
  • Mammogram on a limited basis, diagnostic only


  • Contraceptive medication, devices, insertion or removal of contraceptive devices
  • Obstetrical care
  • Colposcopy
  • Complications resulting from pregnancy
  • Visits to a gynecologist or reproductive specialist
  • Cervical cryotherapy
  • Acute rape counseling
  • STI treatment or medication
  • Cytology follow-up for abnormal pap tests
  • Infertility treatment
  • Treatment for HIV, syphilis, or herpes
  • Pelvic ultrasound or imaging other than basic x-ray


  • All medications are excluded
  • Prescription medications are the financial responsibility of the student
  • Call your pharmacy during regular hours for prescription refills
  • Allow three business days for refills
  • Refills are not done on weekends
  • NOTE: Narcotic, opioid or other controlled medications are not available at any MultiCare Rockwood Urgent Care Center or Family Medicine sites.

Other Excluded Services

  • Comprehensive physicals, i.e. sports, study abroad, employment, DOT, ROTC, internship, etc. Labor & Industry claims or any employment related injuries or conditions
  • Vision and dental care
  • Ambulance services
  • Chemical dependency or substance abuse treatment
  • Alternative health care
  • Chronic pain management
  • Rape test kit (Deaconess hospital is recommended)
  • Emergency room, hospitalization, or surgery
  • Behavioral Health
  • Nutrition/ Dietectics
  • Physical Therapy

Motor Vehicle Accidents

  • Motor vehicle insurance is the primary coverage for MVAs
  • Personal insurance is secondary
  • If student patient has no other insurance coverage, the Rockwood Student Health Plan will clinically evaluate the patient
  • Care is strictly limited to the items outlined under this plan
  • Rockwood is not an insurance company and cannot act as the insurance advocate in cases of dispute or legal issues
