Symptoms of Urologic Cancer

Different types of urologic cancer have different symptoms, and some show no symptoms until the cancer is quite advanced. However, one common symptom of bladder, kidney and prostate cancer is a change in urinary habits, such as:

  • Blood in urine
  • Feeling like you constantly need to urinate, even if you just went
  • Getting up multiple times in the night to urinate
  • Having to urinate more than usual
  • Problems urinating, including an inconsistent stream

Unexplained lower back pain can also be a symptom, as can problems with erectile function, or a lump in your abdomen or testicles.

Risk Factors for Urologic Cancer

Heavy tobacco and alcohol use, along with a family history of similar cancers, are some of the highest risk factors for urologic cancers. White people are more likely to be diagnosed with bladder and testicular cancer, while Black people have a higher risk of prostate cancer. Age is another risk factor for most urologic cancers. However, testicular cancer is most often diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 45.

Diagnosis of Urologic Cancer

Diagnosis of your cancer will depend on your symptoms and the type of cancer you might have. In general, most diagnoses will include:

  • A physical exam, including a full medical history
  • Blood work
  • Urinalysis
  • Imaging, including ultrasounds, CT scans or MRIs
  • Biopsy
