New Hope for Patients Who Need it Most
One in five adults will experience a mental health issue every year — some of those serious enough to require inpatient care. But, with only 2.8 beds per 100,000 residents in our community — compared to a national average of 26.1 beds — access to hospital beds dedicated to those with behavioral health needs has been sorely lacking in Pierce County.
For this reason, CHI Franciscan and MultiCare Health System came together to jointly build and operate an inpatient facility to address this unmet need in our communities: Wellfound Behavioral Health Hospital.
Now Open for Patient Care
Wellfound Behavioral Health Hospital is located on the MultiCare Allenmore Hospital campus in Tacoma, at 3402 S. 19th Street. It is now open for patient care.
The hospital will open its beds in phases, starting with eight inpatient and six crisis-stabilization beds, with more added over time. When fully up and running, the freestanding, two-story hospital will offer 120 inpatient beds and serve approximately 5,000 patients annually, and will provide short-term voluntary and involuntary admissions for adults with a focus on general psychiatric care for individuals ages 18 and older with common psychiatric conditions such as:
- Acute depression
- Suicidal tendencies
Our professional clinicians will treat behavioral health as well as co-existing secondary medical or chemical dependency conditions.
Wellfound accepts referrals from hospital emergency rooms, first responders and crisis centers. Individuals and walk-ins will be evaluated by a skilled assessment team to determine the level of care and treatment needed, and based on evaluation, may be admitted pending bed availability.
Supported by the Coalition for South Sound, a strong community network of elected officials and community leaders led by Congressman Derek Kilmer, Brad Cheney and Bill Weyerhaeuser, Wellfound Behavioral Health Hospital is bringing new hope to members of our community who desperately need this level of care and support.
